Free Stroke Awareness Screenings & Seminars in May

Grand Strand Medical Center is sponsoring free screenings and seminars on stroke related topics during May – stroke awareness month. All seminars and screenings are held at HealthFinders at the Coastal Grand Mall unless noted.
Healthy Eating Habits for Preventing Stroke is the topic on Tuesday, May 6, 2 - 3 p.m., with nutritionist Kelly Snow, RD. She will review recipes and explain how to substitute ingredients to make them healthier.
Get Stroke Smart with Grand Strand Medical Center’s stroke director and vascular neurologist, Anil Yallapragada, MD. He will discuss the signs, symptoms, diagnosis and treatments for stroke on Tuesday, May 6, 6 – 7 p.m.
Learn how atrial fibrillation relates to stroke on Wednesday, May 7, 6 – 7 p.m.
Stroke Prevention is the topic on Thursday, May 8, 6 – 7 p.m. Vascular neurologist Anil Yallapgrada, MD, will discuss risk factors and ways to prevent a stroke.
Respiratory therapist Trudy Holder, RRT, will discuss how smoking affects your lungs and overall health on Monday, May 12, 1 – 2 p.m.
Using a Post Stroke Checklist to improve long-term stroke management and quality of life will be discussed on Monday, May 12, 6 – 7 p.m.
On Thursday, May 15, noon – 1 p.m., learn ways to quit smoking with a South Carolina Tobacco-Free Collaborative representative.
Atrial fibrillation, a cardiac arrhythmia where the top of the heart does not squeeze effectively, is one of the greatest risk factors for stroke. Free, five minute, non invasive heart rhythm screenings to learn your risk will be held at HealthFinders on Thursday, May 15, 6 – 7 p.m. and at the YMCA on Monday, May 19, 2 – 3 p.m. For ages 25+. Stroke and Diabetes with Denise Wilson, RN, BSE, CDE, is the topic on Tuesday, May 27, 3 – 4 p.m.
