Ranks Grand Strand Medical Center #1 in South Carolina for Cardiac Surgery
Grand Strand Medical Center was ranked number one out of 16 programs in South Carolina for cardiac surgery for 2012, according to a new study by HealthGrades, the nation’s leading independent healthcare quality company. Grand Strand Medical Center is also ranked among the top five percent in the nation for cardiac surgery in 2012.
The Number One in Cardiac Surgery designation includes coronary artery bypass surgery and valve replacement. Specifically, Grand Strand Medical Center received 5-star (highest) ratings for coronary bypass surgery and cardiac surgery.
Grand Strand Medical Center was also ranked number two in South Carolina for overall cardiac services for 2012.
As part of the study, HealthGrades rated individual hospitals with a 1-star, 3-star or 5-star rating in each of 26 procedures and diagnoses, from bypass surgery to total knee replacements. A 1-star rating means that the hospital performed below average, to a statistically significant degree, when compared with the other 5,000 hospitals. A 3-star rating means the hospital's performance was average, and a 5-star rating means the hospital outperformed the national average to a statistically significant degree.
Choosing a hospital can be a life or death decision. The HealthGrades report found that patients treated at 5-star rated hospitals experienced a 73% lower risk of mortality and a 63% lower risk of complications compared to 1-star rated hospitals.
“Patients today have a wide array of options when it comes to choosing a healthcare provider,” said Kerry Hicks, HealthGrades chief executive officer. “We commend Grand Strand Medical Center for its superior quality and support of consumerism and transparency in the Myrtle Beach area.”
“We are very pleased and proud to be recognized again with these outstanding HealthGrades quality ratings, which validate our commitment to clinical excellence,” said Doug White, CEO. “Top ratings from an independent, objective national source, demonstrate the quality care that our physicians, nurses and staff deliver to the patients and families in our community every day.”
“To be recognized three consecutive years as the number one cardiac surgery program in South Carolina is a wonderful achievement and a tribute to the great staff that cares for our patients. Saving and improving lives of residents and visitors in this region is our top priority,” added White.
“In South Carolina, Grand Strand Medical Center stands out notably in terms of delivering quality care for its heart surgery patients,” says Brian McIntyre, MD, one of two cardiothoracic surgeons at Grand Strand Medical Center. “Patients, families and employers truly have access to healthcare that is among the best in the nation.”
Cardiac surgeons perform over 350 cardiac surgeries annually at Grand Strand Medical Center. Over 5,000 heart surgeries have been performed since the program began in 1995.
“Potential patients should look at experience and high volume when choosing a hospital for cardiac surgery,” says McIntyre. “HealthGrades objective data helps consumers make better and more informed healthcare decisions. It is important for them to know that there is a tremendous difference in clinical quality outcomes between hospitals.”
As part of its 14th annual Hospital Quality in America Study, HealthGrades independently analyzed the quality of care and survival rates from 2007 – 2010 at nearly 5,000 hospitals in all 50 states and the District of Columbia for its 2011 ratings, objectively assessing their clinical outcomes and quality.
