Conference Schedule

Family Medicine residents will have the opportunity to enhance their educational experience through daily conferences or didactic sessions, sponsored by both the Family Medicine and Internal Medicine programs. These sessions will help fulfill the GME requirements for specialty training in Family Medicine, and residents are expected to participate unless their clinical duties prevent them from doing so. The curriculum includes a mixture of noon conferences, board review sessions, M&M conferences and practice management sessions. There are also longer didactic sessions occurring monthly, which involve more detailed teaching and interaction; some sessions will involve participation in the Simulation Lab. All conferences and didactics will be focused on core Family Medicine topics and will be taught by faculty familiar with those topics.

  • Medical Grand Rounds are generally held monthly, in conjunction with the Internal Medicine program. Faculty and guest speakers discuss a broad range of topics relevant to clinical practice and graduate medical education.
  • Morbidity and Mortality Improvement Conferences are held monthly, either as part of the Family Medicine or Internal Medicine conference schedule. Residents present case-based discussion with faculty assistance. Emphasis is placed on resident-driven quality improvement.
  • Journal Club Conferences take place once monthly. These conferences are presented by an assigned resident who chooses the article, distributes it prior to the conference and leads the discussion.
  • Patient-Centered Evidence-Based Medicine Conference is held monthly. Residents present evidence-based answers to clinical questions generated in the outpatient clinic or the inpatient service.
  • Board Review Conference occurs weekly, either through the Family Medicine or Internal Medicine curriculum, and will cover the expansive range of medical topics expected for competency in a family physician. Online board review questions may be utilized to generate discussion and learning.
  • General Lecture Series occurs twice weekly in the Family Medicine noon conference series and weekly in the Internal Medicine series. These lectures will cover topics pertinent to the practice of Family Medicine, ranging from obstetrics to geriatrics, consistent with the training requirements mandated by the ACGME.
  • Business of Medicine/Practice Management Series occurs monthly and focuses on practical and relevant management skills, understanding insurance, coding and billing, financial planning, contract negotiation and overview of healthcare policy. Residents are also required to attend a monthly practice business meeting, in which financial details of the Family Medicine Center are discussed and physician productivity is reviewed.
  • Didactic Sessions take place one afternoon monthly and will cover topics in more detail, utilizing a variety of formats. In addition to traditional clinical topics, didactic sessions will also focus on issues such as physician wellness, research skills, communication skills, procedural skills in the Simulation Lab, board review and medical humanities.
