Myrtle Beach, SC – Grand Strand Medical Center has launched the Graduate
Medical Education Program with residents starting in July 2015. The Accreditation Council for
Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Residency Review Committee granted the accreditation for
Internal Medicine in September and General Surgery in November.

“Our Grand Strand team is committed to providing the care and healthcare innovation our community needs. Becoming a teaching hospital is another step towards fulfilling this . This new residency program will develop highly-qualified physicians with hopes they continue their practices in our community,” states Mark Sims, CEO of Grand Strand Medical Center.

“We are excited to become a community-based academic medical center dedicated to providing highlyqualified physicians in Internal Medicine and General Surgery,” said Stephen Salerno, MD, Chief of Graduate Medical Education at Grand Strand Medical Center. “Our residents will receive training from some of the most experienced specialists in Horry County and surrounding communities.”

The Internal Medicine Residency Program will have a total of 30 (10 in 2015) accredited residents by 2017. This program will use a 4 + 1 block schedule pioneered at Tulane University that allows residents to focus on blocks of pure inpatient, specialty, or ambulatory patient care experiences. The resident continuity clinic experience, which will be managed by Health Care Partners, will expand primary care options for patients in Horry County.
