Grand Strand Health offers a series of childbirth education classes to help parents, siblings and caretakers to be prepared for your new baby. Classes are taught by Grand Strand Health Registered Nurses at Grand Strand Medical Center or at HealthFinders. It is suggested that parents take these classes eight weeks prior to the baby’s due date.
- Prepared Childbirth Classes meet in the hospital classroom on the first floor, with sessions taught monthly.
- Sibling Preparation and Maternity Center Tours will meet the instructor in Grand Strand Medical Center’s Main Lobby 5 minutes before the class or tour start time.
- Breastfeeding, Infant Care and Infant/Child CPR classes are taught at HealthFinders, the hospital’s community resource center located in Coastal Grand Mall, beside Dillard’s.

Prepared Childbirth Class
A six-hour class held on Saturday and provides instruction of the birthing process, breathing and relaxation techniques, physical conditioning and coaching skills. Fee: $50 per couple; includes lunch, tour of OB unit, birthing rooms and nursery.
This two-hour class provides instruction in the art of breastfeeding as a positive experience. Proper techniques and the role of the support person are discussed. Class is offered one Saturday each month. Support persons are welcome to attend. There is no charge to attend this class.
Infant Care Class
Basic guidelines of newborn care are provided in this two-hour class. The emphasis is on confidence as the newborn’s primary caretaker. Class is offered one Saturday each month. There is no charge to attend this class.
A Grand Strand Medical Center obstetrics nurse will take you on a tour of the Maternity Center and answer any questions you have about the unit. The tour includes a visit to the Maternity Center, including the birthing room and a discussion of general information regarding your OB stay at Grand Strand Medical Center. Tours are offered one Sunday afternoon each month. There is no charge to take the tour.
Infant Child CPR
Three-hour class is designed to prepare parents and other caretakers to respond appropriately in an emergency. Instruction in proper administration of CPR, first aid and choking relief for infants and children is taught. Participants must be at least 12 years old. Offered one Saturday afternoon each month. Fee: $15
Our one-hour class is designed to help children ages 3-10 prepare for the baby’s arrival. The class teaches brothers and sisters about their involvement in the birthing experience and preparation for the baby’s homecoming. A tour of the OB unit is included. One parent must accompany the child. Offered one Sunday afternoon each month. There is no charge to attend this class.
